Tree ferns and tall trunks lit blue at night at Ferngully, the family home where the business started

About

Lights first

Ferngully Productions is a family-run event business on the Sunshine Coast. DJ, lighting, lasers and visuals mixed live — not a playlist and a light stand. The work started as backyard parties at Ferngully in Cooloolabin and turned into a business when people started asking for it at theirs.

How this happened

From lasers through the ferns

  1. Lasers through the ferns

Bigger and bigger backyard parties. I bought lights, then lasers, then projection, then sound. Obsessed, and spending money I had no business spending.

  2. They came to Ferngully, then wanted it at theirs

I stitched YouTube clips together and hoped the beats lined up. No mixing, just a three-hour movie. One song request and I had nothing.

  3. The big jobs taught more than they paid

A three-day festival that cost me a week off work, a band tour to Sydney, nine months of night markets in the rain. Gear out in the weather.

  4. Learned to mix it live

DJ software ran the video clips. That was the moment I could follow a room instead of a playlist.

  5. Strangers started paying me

People hire a DJ, not a lighting rig, so private events became the work.

The Light

We cross paths with those who seek more than the ordinary, and together, we craft one night to escape routine and share a world that comes alive.

The Rhizomes

What's under every night

  • ArcFrom first hello to the last song of the night.
  • MixPeople, music, ideas and moments, until the night feels like theirs.
  • SparkThe energy and the little moments that make people go, “WoW!”
  • KitSeriously good gear, and knowing how to make it earn its place.
  • CraftyWhen the obvious answer is not good enough, find a better one.

Who you'll deal with

Not a big team

I run the nights. Rochelle looks after clients through the week. Kyla loads in and packs down.

Ferngully is our family home at Cooloolabin. It's where the business started and where new ideas get tried first. It isn't a venue and it isn't for hire.
